Sean Kim

Born in Korea, Sean Kim attended the University of Western Ontario to complete his Bachelors (2001) and Masters (2003) degrees in composition. While at Western, Sean studied piano, harpsichord, composition, and instrumental conducting. Currently, he is working on a Ph.D. in Systematic Musicology under the guidance of Dr. Paul Frehner.

Sean’s focus is in music composition creating musical works by linking seismology and transformational theory. His compositions and arrangements have been performed by various ensembles including the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Esprit Orchestra, Blyth Festival Orchestra, Korean-Canadian Symphony Orchestra, Brassroots, London Singers, SoundStreams, and Ensemble Transmission.

Concomitantly, Sean is an instructor of orchestration at the University of Western Ontario and voice leading and arranging at the University of Windsor, conductor of the Blyth Festival Orchestra, music director and organist for St. John the Divine Anglican Church in Arva, an examiner for Conservatory Canada in both practical and theoretical studies, and an adjudicator for Kiwanis and other music festivals.  He frequently performs contemporary music with Orchestra London as a keyboardist.

  • Loki, for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, trumpet, trombone, 2 violins, viola, cello, double bass, percussion, piano (Aventa Ensemble)  (Completed, Oct 11, 2011)
  • Post cards, for 2 percussion (DuO Percussion)
  • Namazu, for large orchestra (PhD dissertation)
  • Go, Tell It on the Mountain (Arrangement/Orchestration for London Singers and Orchestra)
